MALE BREAST REDUCTION (GYNAECOMASTIA)

What is Male Breast Reduction?
Male breast reduction surgery is a liposuction technique designed to combat excessive breast development in the male chest area, otherwise colloquially known as 'man breast'.
It is a very common cause of embarrassment for men and can be treated easily and carefully through this effective procedure. It is one of the most common cosmetic procedures for men. The overall effect is to deliver a more grafted, aesthetically pleasing breast and chest area, firmer to the touch and tightly, with smooth overlying skin.
Excessive breast development in men, or gynecomastia, can be caused by:

  • A natural hormone imbalance, e.g. Estrogen / Testosterone
  • Weight gain or obesity
  • Medical condition, e.g. Testicular disease, cirrhosis
  • Use of steroids

What are the benefits of male breast reduction surgery?

The benefits of male breast reduction surgery are both cosmetic and psychological, and include:
  • The firmer, leaner upper chest area
  • Strong chest skin and elasticity
  • More masculine-looking chest
  • Ability to wear tight cut clothes / T-shirts
  • Improve emotional well-being
Why is a male breast reduction?
Excessive breast development in most cases is caused by excessive fat accumulation levels, but on occasion, it can be either due to hormonal problems or in some cases as side effects by those taking estrogen to treat cancer or steroids.

This can develop among teenagers as most breasts develop in puberty, and are often uncomfortable and this can make them very self-conscious and lose some of their body confidence. For most young men, it returns naturally in a few years as they drop out of puberty. However, there are many cases where it does not return, and enlarged breasts will remain. At other times, only the nipple may enlarge, commonly known as the 'puffy nipple'.

This condition is also very common with older men. As their bodies begin to change, they produce less testosterone, while many older men have higher body fat at the same time due to which the body begins to produce more estrogen. All these changes in hormones can cause additional tissue growth in the breasts. Losing weight may help in some cases, however, breast tissue may not improve through this alone.
