What are facial fractures?


Facial fracture bones are broken anywhere on the face. This includes the nose, cheekbones, the area around the eyes and the upper and lower jaws.

Most of the time, they are caused by some type of trauma to the face, such as motor vehicle accidents, sports injuries, falls, or fights. Sometimes, they occur because the facial bones are weakened by a dental procedure or condition.

What are the symptoms of a facial fracture?
It depends on which bones of the face are broken. Some things, such as pain, swelling, and bruising, are symptoms of any broken bone.

  • Pain

The main symptom is swelling or deformity on the face.

When to seek medical care
If you have a facial injury, see your doctor as soon as possible. Some facial fractures can be fatal. Others may have problems with your respiratory system, airway passages, central nervous system or vision that are not reversible.

How is Facial Fracture Diagnosed?
The type of physical examination and your doctor's order will depend on the type of injury you have.

Your doctor will examine your face for any signs of swelling and pain. He will also check for any changes in mobility (whether you are able to move parts of your face). You may have taken an X-ray. Most fractures will be clearly visible on these tests.
